 VF-Engineering chose to supercharge the BMW E38 740 to increase throttle response and mid-to-top end power with the centrifugal Vortech supercharger. With the stock 4.4 liter motor, power and torque are already suitable for the heavy 7 series chassis. However this upgrade is for the V8 enthusiast who demands more power. The new found power makes the E38 740 powerful enough to overtake and accelerate hard with the greatest ease. As a daily driver the supercharged BMW 740 is a mild mannered executive car waiting for the throttle body to be flung open. It is easy to slide the back out under full throttle and send the 7 series V8 to ridiculous speeds way above the limit. Upgraded brakes are a suggested pre-requisite. |

Both the E32 and the E38 7-Series can suffer from the dreaded 'shimmy'. This is wheel-wobble that usually first shows itself under braking, for instance, when coming off a motorway intersection and braking from high speed. The wobble can be felt through the steering-wheel but it usually disappears as the car speed reduces.
Sometimes this is all you ever get, but more usually you will start to get wobble as the car is accelerated through 50 - 60MPH. The more you drive the car the worse it will get. The wobble is quite often accompanied by tram lining and a general feeling of imprecision from the steering in general.
The shimmies are often an indication of general wear in the steering system and suspension, the BMW E38 has a great deal of weight over the front wheels, especially when braking. It also seems to have a resonant frequency that occurs between 50 and 60 MPH, if there is any weakness it is at this speed where the problems will occur.

 There have been five generations of the 7 Series BMW: * BMW E23 (1977–1986) * BMW E32 (1987–1994) * BMW E38 (1994–2001) * BMW E65/E66 (2002–2008) * BMW F01 (2009-present) The E38 BMW 7 series sedan was introduced to the US market with the 1995 model year last year of production was 2001. The E38 was considered to be the best seven series produced by BMW thanks to it’s flawless design and amazing character, this vehicle was truly a grown up luxury sports sedan with it’s driver oriented interior and amazing handling mixed with perfect luxury. BMW offered two versions the i - short wheel base and the 6” longer il versions. The il is easily recognizable of it’s long passenger window. For the US market two engine variants were offered the 4.4 liter V8 in the 740i and 740il and the 5.4 V12 engine in the 750il, the V12 was never offered to US customers with the short wheel base version. |

The last 740d was a 4.0 V8 diesel. Confusingly to people outside BMW, the new 740d is not a V8, nor a 4.0-litre. Ah. Nope, the new biggest diesel in the 7-Series range is a new super-efficient twin-turbo straight-six, and it's a 3.0-litre block, but this time not derived from the same 3.0-litre motor that you find in 30d and 35d versions elsewhere in the BMW ranges. Still with me? Right, explanation ahoy: this new motor gets an all-aluminium crankcase and third-generation, common-rail fuel injection that's good for 2,000 bar of pressure. Piezo injectors provide the injection, and big pressure and fine control are good things. Higher pressure means bigger bangs, control means more efficient burns, the pair bring better power and economy. |
